Your Coconut Spa and Home Remedies

Making time and money for a spa treatment isn’t always possible. Sometimes you just have to make due at home.

I have a secret weapon I use every day that has helped to keep my skin moist and firm, reduce potential for cavities, improve my oral health and healed several infections.

Coconut oil is a natural saturated medium-chain triglyceride (fat) that has only recently started to receive the media attention it so richly deserves.  There are over 1500 different research studies evaluating the uses and benefits of coconut oil. (1)

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid, all of which have specific benefits both alone and in tandem.

One of the benefits I LOVE is the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the oil. Every morning I brush my teeth with a combination of coconut oil and small amount of baking soda.

After brushing, I pull the oil.  This is the process of swishing the oil around in your mouth for 10 to 15 minutes each day. It was difficult to get used to in the beginning, but now I often forget how long I’ve been pulling and a session may go as long as 30 minutes.

The results I’ve experienced have been amazing.

My mouth naturally produces a bit more saliva than normal. This is good that I don’t have a problem with dry mouth, but the added saliva increases the amount of plaque formation on my teeth. This makes every teeth cleaning an experience I’d rather not repeat.

No matter how much flossing and brushing I’ve done in the past, cleanings are painful and take a LONG time.

I hadn’t had a cleaning in 3 years and it was time. I was really dreading the visit.  Turns out I didn’t have anything to be worried about.

After 3 years it was the shortest and most painless cleaning I’d ever gone through. The pockets in my gums measured the smallest they could be – 1 mm!

When the dentist asked how I managed this miracle, I told her I had been pulling with coconut oil for a year.

Coconut oil in my curly hair to hold it place and reduce the frizzies on humid days.

Coconut oil in my cooking because it holds up under heat without going rancid. The smoke point is 350 to 400 degrees, so great on the stove (not frying) but not the oven.

You may not know the oil you’re cooking with degenerates at high heat because you won’t smell anything different, but vegetable oil, olive oil, sesame oil and corn oils all degrade at high heat.

The saturated fats coconut oil adds to the food reduces my risk for diabetes and heart disease. (2,3) Research shows that healthy saturated fats, like those found in coconut oil, raw nuts and avocados, will increase the size of small low density lipoproteins (LDL) so they are no longer dangerous.(4,5)

Coconut oil actually helps you burn fat! You’ll feel fuller longer and eat less. And it increases your energy level and endurance – especially important to single moms.

Coconut oil also acts as a natural sunscreen. In combination with another powerful antioxidant, astaxanthin, you’ll likely see improvements in your skin.

The medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil produce ketones in your body. These ketones feed your brain, reduce the risk for seizures and helps reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Your brain produces insulin to convert sugar to fuel. However, people with Alzheimer’s have lost the ability to produce insulin in their brain. Coconut oil produces ketones which your brain uses to help reduce the damage caused by Alzheimer’s. (6)

The antioxidants in virgin coconut oil reduces the inflammatory response and the pain of arthritis. (7)

The anti-inflammatory effects of coconut oil help reduce your dandruff, psoriasis and eczema.

The capric and lauric acid in coconut oil are an effective and natural treatment for candida and yeast infections. Eliminate sugar and grains from your diet, which feed the yeast, and take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil three times a day.  (8)

Saturated fats and lauric acid may also help you to balance your hormone levels. Research demonstrates this saturated fat may be helpful to balance your estrogen levels during menopause and help you to get pregnant. (9)

Coconut oil is safe, effective and not expensive.  Be sure to buy virgin coconut oil that is cold processed as heat reduces or eliminates the benefits of the oil.
